About
The Christoph Meyer Foundation seeks to continue the improvement of health care by providing support to health professional training of students in the area. The foundation has invested in small business development by providing much needed rental properties and from the income will be able to continue supporting students through their studies in close cooperation with the Mseleni Hospital.
Finance
To date the money raised has not been sufficient to give a bursary to any student but has been used to assist with initial costs for registration and travel thus helping students to gain access to other funds. Many able students are not attending colleges for training due to a lack of finance and informed support by parents.
The Students
Mseleni has been able to assist a number of students and to date we have 13 students (7 medical students, 1 dentistry, 1 occupational therapy, 1 optometry, 1 radiography, 1 medical technology and 1 pharmacy) doing health profesional training. Three have received financial support and three more will be receiving financial aid this year. Others have been assisted organizationally to avail themselves of bursaries and loans from other sources.
Our Target
Our target for the next five years is 7 students per year. It costs approx R26,000 per year for a university student. This will require a foundation income of R182,000 per year to fund each student for their first year. However, we have understandings with a number of bodies and universities wereby students whom we support from our community will also receive partial grants from them. (A type of "gearing" such that two students this year will receive 1/4 from us, 1/4 from MESAB and 1/2 from the university). Furthermore, the deptartment of health bursary sectionb is ready to support poor students from our area whom we have identified and are progressing well in university.
It is a window of opportunity.
