Hospital Clinics
Mseleni Hospital has 8 clinics covering an
area of 300km2. The closer and more accessible clinics (such as
the one at Mbazwana) are accessed by car. ZUMAT (Zululand Mission Air
Transport) provides a small airplane to transport doctors to the clinics
furthest away and least accessible.
5 of the clinics are open 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. The other 3 are open
from 7am until 4pm.
The clinics are controlled by Mseleni
Hospital, but are run
by nursing staff who live at or near the clinic. On the administrative side,
the nurses are responsible for ordering drugs, collating monthly statistics,
keeping and organising records and notification of
TB cases.
Clinically, their responsibilities include holding well baby clinics, dealing
with casualties and performing CPR when needed, delivering babies, inserting
catheters, dispensing drugs, applying and replacing dressings and bandages
and inserting IVI's.
Every week the clinics are visited by a doctor. Each doctor has one or two
clinics which they are responsible for, and they visit for a day, sometimes
with the help of a student. The therapists, dentist and social worker visit
each clinic once every 2 weeks. They will see the patients from that area who have been advised to return by the nurse. If possible
they will provide the patient with treatment there. If not they will refer
them to the hospital, where they will be seen by a Medical Officer in OPD
where there are better facilities.
Mseleni Pharmacy provides the clinics with the
drugs needed. It is the responsibility of the nurses running the clinics to
place the orders in plenty of time.
Some clinics are busier than others, depending on their location. Mbazwana is
the busiest, and Mabibi is the quietest.
