Departments: Pharmacy
& Laboratory
Pharmacy
Our Vision:
"To provide pharmaceutical services to the
patients and other health departments"
The pharmacy has posts for a pharmacy manager and a pharmacist and dispenses
medication for patients, wards and clinics.

The pharmacy is stocked with most medication, and only in special cases do
orders have to be placed. We try our best to dispense medication to patients
while they are at the hospital, as it is difficult and expensive for people
to return just to pick up their prescribed medicine.

Both clinics and wards are supplied by the pharmacy. Clinics place orders
twice a month, and wards twice a week.
Laboratory
Our Vision:
"To provide haematology services to
patients in the hospital and the clinics."
There are 3 medical technologists, 1 medical technician and 2 student medical
technicians working in the laboratory. At night there is one medical
technologist on call to carry out any urgent tests.

Tests carried out most often:
- U/E's & creatinines
- Glucose
- Lumbar puncture
- Full blood count
(FBC)
- Auramine Stain for Acid fast
bacilli (AFB)
- Urine microscopy
- Stool microscopy
- Liver function test
(LFT)
- Malaria
A full blood count takes approximately 20
minutes, other chemistry tests take about 30 minutes, LFT's
take approximately 1½ hours and an AFB test takes 4 hours.
The laboratory is equipped with all the machines and equipment needed
including a CX3 Coulter for U/Es and creatinines, a
Pentra 80 machine for FBCs
and a COBAS Integra 400plus for LFTs.
70% of the workload is from the clinics. Doctors and other hospital staff
visit the clinics and bring back samples for testing. Tests are carried out
on the samples as soon as they arrive in the lab, except those needing tests
such as Hb, RPR and RH which can wait until normal
routine tests have been carried out.
